Why is my pool losing water?
A Costa del Sol pool normally loses a few millimetres a day to evaporation in summer — noticeably more in wind and heat, less in winter. Losing several centimetres a week, or needing to top up constantly, usually means a leak rather than evaporation.
Leaks are typically at the skimmer throat, the return fittings, the underground pipework, the light niche or a crack in the shell or liner.
How do I know if my pool has a leak?
The simplest test is the bucket test: fill a bucket with pool water, stand it on a step so the levels match inside and outside, mark both, and compare after 24 hours with the pump running as normal. If the pool drops more than the bucket, water is leaving the system.
- Water level dropping faster than nearby pools
- Constantly running auto-fill or frequent topping up
- Persistently wet or sinking ground around the pool
- Air in the pump or loss of prime
- Rising water bills with no change in use
- Cracked or lifting tiles at the waterline
Is evaporation normal?
Yes. Evaporation is normal and it is at its highest in July and August, in wind, and on uncovered heated pools. A thermal cover cuts it substantially, which is also why cover use makes leak diagnosis easier.
Can you pressure-test pool pipes?
Yes. Suction and return lines can be isolated and pressure-tested individually to establish which line is losing water before anything is dug up. We combine that with dye testing at the skimmer, lights and fittings and a visual inspection of the plant room.
Can pool lights or skimmers leak?
Both are common leak points. The skimmer throat cracks where it meets the shell, and light niches leak through the conduit or the seal. Both are usually repairable in place without draining the whole pool.
After the leak is found
Once located, the repair is either a fitting or seal replacement, a section of pipework, or a shell or liner repair. Where the leak sits alongside failing equipment, we will point you at pool repair for the mechanical side and pool maintenance to keep the water stable while the work is scheduled.
